Designing Kurogane’s ‘real-life’ look turned out to be much more difficult than Fay’s. Out of the two of them, I thought it’d be Fay’s design that gave me headaches, but I had to draw Kurogane’s out several times to get it right.
The facial features of an oriental person are very rounded. All soft lines and curves. The trouble with that, is that Kurogane has very angular, chisled features (See: [link] ) and I found that when I started to take the natural roundness out of the Japanese face, he began to look quite western. I’m not quite sure how I got around it in the end, but the third draft was the charm. Japanese eyes are also difficult to get right... Karisma Colour pencils and HB graphite pencil.
